March Income – New Baby and New Records

New month, new baby and a new income record! March was a busy month for the business with many new projects on the go.

Between the hiring of 2 additional staff in house and a BIG new project that is all about putting more capital to work in this space I am excited. Expect a very interesting case study soon about the new project and in particular the BrandBuilders.io deal structure.

It is still a challenge to ensure I am giving all projects the amount of attention they deserve especially with the arrival of my 3rd child and spending more time at home.

This report covers the results of the business during March!

The Business “Divisions” For My Online Business:

  1. Money Site Portfolio
  2. AuthorityWebsiteIncome Blog
  3. Services – Web Development, Content Marketing & Link Building:
  4. Amazon FBA Business
    • Brands 1-6 – All have specific targets for 2017
    • – Amazon FBA Hijacking and Suppression Monitoring
  5. Put Outside Capital to Work Efficiently in the Online Asset Space

Key Successes

  1. ContentRefined.com Growth (10% compounding per week!) – Content Refined has continued to grow at 10% per week for 4 months now! Maddie is handling all orders extremely well and we are getting fantastic feedback on both the service and the support!

2. BrandBuilders Deal – The launch of the turnkey sites was CRAZY… they sold out in a matter of hours and we are quickly scaling to be able to handle additional volume! You can sign up for the early bird list here.

3. FBA Businesses – After a few months of struggles with the FBA businesses we have had the start of success on a few fronts with these brands and look

4. Quality of Applicants & New Hires – I posted a job to hire a summer intern and ended up with an incredible number of quality applicants! I am excited about the 3 people I will be adding to my in-house team and their potential contributions to the company and this website/audience.

Key Failures

  1. # of Projects and Unrealized Opportunity – With the number of projects I have it is clear that a few have some pretty amazing potential but I am spending time on projects that even if they hit their targets won’t deliver the type of results a small incredible increase in the other projects would yield. This is an ongoing struggle but allocating my time to balance both diversification of risk and optimizing my return on time. My hope is that with the increased staff my capacity will continue to be increased and I will be able to give increased attention to the projects that are morst deserving of it!

2017 Business Goals

Below is my businesses main goals for 2017…

Part 1 – Passive Authority & Niche Website Income Profit/Loss

3 Goals in 2016 for my Website Portfolio Business

  1. Everyone Win at the Mortgage Crushing Competition

Mar Update – The team is doing very well in the MortgageCrushingCompetition. Everyone struggles with the same issues of finding time to invest in this project but all sites are looking good!

  • Traffic = 4,175 Unique Users
  • Earnings = $12.72

2. Buy 1 Site Per Month

Mar Update – This was the first month in a long time where I did not actually add a content site into my portfolio! I did buy an Amazon FBA business and through an entity I will talk more about later we made another productized service acquisition but for me personally, I did not buy any content site!

  • GOAL = 1 New Website Purchased
  • ACTUAL = 0 New Website Purchased

If any readers are looking to sell their profitable site(s) VERY QUICKLY let me know by emailing me. I can let you know in 12hrs if I am interested and complete the purchase in 24-48hrs – Contact Me Here

I have found the right sellers are those…

  • Looking to sell FAST (under 24hrs has been accomplished!) (shorter time for due diligence on my end increases risk for me)
  • Not wanting to spend a lot of time on the sales process (analytics and income proof is all I need)
  • SEO done to the site can be questionable and that increased risk will be reflected in the sales price
  • Site being associated with a banned Amazon Associate is still possible to sell (but STEEP discount!)
  • Understand that the benefits of the bullet points above means the sales multiple will be lower than if you went a more traditional route

If you have a profitable website you are looking to sell fast please let me know

Amazon FBA, SAAS or Larger Websites I Can Close on Quickly As Well – Contact Me Here

3. Scalable New Site Creation Strategy adds $5k to Portfolio

Mar Update – This project is going well with a LOT of traffic rolling into these sites. The earnings are behind where I want them to be but I made some organization changes that have put Kelley who is a wiz with this stuff in charge of my portfolio with a CO-OP student to help part time.

  • Traffic – 40,089 Uniques per month
  • Earnings – $351.72 (lots of opportunity for improving! currently behing plan!)

PRIMARY GOAL – OVERALL INCOME FOR WEBSITE PORTFOLIO GROW TO $15k/MONTH CONSISTENTLY

Mar Update – The graph looks awesome! Except there is a one-time earnings event in here that will not be repeated. Definitely, have a lot of work to do to drive up the earnings for my sites. Many sites with great traffic but not earning enough from them, many tests are now underway.

Part 2 – Authority Website Income Blog Profit/Loss

3 Goals in 2015 for AuthorityWebsiteIncome.com

  1. Post Once Per Week

Mar Update – March was not my best month for the site! The posts were not as in depth as I would like and were more mind-set then tactical. I am working to fix that this month! My excuse… baby… but it is a weak excuse since we had ~9months to prepare for me not working much for a few days.

  • Plan = 4
  • Actual = 3

2. Systematic Promotion of my Content and Building of my List

Mar Update – No Progress  – One of the team members joining will have it on her plate to help develop and execute and improved strategy here.

3. Increased Intelligence with Email Automation

Mar Update – Good progress last month with proper tagging, now it is up to me to better define the process.

PRIMARY GOAL – GROW TO 30k VISITORS PER MONTH

Mar Update – 17,257… Lots of work to do this year to hit this target! I will continue pushing!

Part 3 – Services Business Profit/Loss

  1. Systems First Focus

Mar Update – Great continued focus from the manager of the services.

  1. LE – Quality and Efficiency Improvements

Mar Update – The ranking improvements we saw from the tests we ran are continuing this month!

Visit LightningRank.com for Link Building Services!

  1. ContentRefined.com – 20k MRR by June & 40k MRR by End of Year

Mar Update – We have had an average compounding growth rate of 10.76%(PER WEEK) for 13weeks! Customers are thrilled and we are blowing through our targets. Many long hours are being put in by the team led by Maddie but we are very excited for what options we have for this business!

  • Planned MRR = $14,000
  • Actual MRR = $22,187

Visit ContentRefined.com for Content Marketing Services!

4. BrandBuilders.io Structurally Well Setup & New Offering Launched

Mar Update – Achieved – expect a very interesting case study soon! The TurnKey affiliate sites ready in 24hrs are fantastic and feedback has been great (selling out in under 24hrs again)!

PRIMARY GOAL – SYSTEMATIC GROWTH!

Part 4 – Amazon FBA Business

  • Brand #1 – HG – Running Lean and Spinning off Cash
    • Mar Update – Running lean (don’t have the numbers for this business so not included in the income report)
  • Brand #2 – CF – Quarterly Dividends Ahead of Baseline
    • Mar Update – Continuing to run lean and profitable
  • Brand #3 – NT – Path To Strong Market Position and Successful Pillar Product
    • Mar Update – This business may be the first one we need to kill… unfortunate and we will test a couple more ideas but our landed cost is simply too high for this product to be really profitable.
  • Brand #4 – CF – Systematic Growth to $20k/month Profit
    • Mar Update – GREAT NEWS – we are back on Amazon and selling!
  • Brand #5 – PC – Successful launch and $5k/month Business
    • Mar Update – We are now selling! With 2 websites pushing sales we are looking forward to seeing how we are able to compete in this space.
  • Brand #6 – SE – 4X Value Expansion with Dream Team!
    • Mar Update – Products are on the boat for the first very small validation order!
  • com – Hijack Monitoring Service
    • Mar Update – Continuing to run very lean with little effort on growth. Great solution for people who want to be notified ASAP if their listing goes down.

Part 5 – Put Outside Capital to Work Efficiently

Mar Update – I will have some big news on this front soon!

Overall Income Update

Original Monthly Net Income Target (original goal $15k/month reliable income by age 35)

  • Target Net Income = $10,750
  • Actual Net Income = $60,065.61
  • 2017 Average Net Income = $45,586.10

Gross revenue is a vanity number for my business and I do not share it.

Final Comments

March was a month where I definitely felt I started to be more active working on my business and not in it. The next phase of growth for the business I believe is clear and that is continuing to get better at managing my team, pushing out more value to my audience at AuthorityWebsiteIncome and focusing on my largest opportunities within my portfolio/investments.

There will be what I hope is a very interesting case study coming soon about how adding a 3rd option (not just sell/don’t sell) for world class operators who aren’t necessarily looking to sell but want to take some risk off the table. If this might apply to you please reach out to me and I can let you know more details.

September Income Report 2016

September was a fun month with a lot of work on growth projects, plenty of challenges and adapting to the impact of the loss of my Amazon associates account.

The loss of the associate account in Sep was largely offset by my sites in the education niche but I do expect there to be a more obvious impact in my money site portfolio performance next month.

The Business “Divisions” For My Online Business:

  1. Money Site Portfolio
  2. AuthorityWebsiteIncome Blog
  3. SEO & Expired Domain Services:
  4. Amazon FBA Business
    • Brand #1 – Sold 2/3
    • Brand #2 – Purchased Website
    • Brand #3 – Product First Focus
    • – Amazon FBA Hijacking and Suppression Monitoring

Key Successes

  1. Continued Definition of Focus – My why had been crystal clear for a long time with the obsessive focus on building up the business and exiting the day job. I have been doing some work over the last 2 months and I am starting to crystalize my businesses mission/vision/values etc that will all lead into an annual planning process.
  2. Improving Systems – It was a good month on making progress towards having all parts of my money site management system fully systematized! The newest addition to my in-house team is working out well and helping to centralize the fragmented systems I currently have.

Key Failures

  1. Amazon Associate Account Suspension – Just awesome! Here is the story, we are adapting and moving forward! But obviously hurts the bottom line when a profit center goes to zero while the expenses associated with that profit center stay the same. Part of the business and the reason for diversification. The irony is that we had just finished a very detailed process for completing Amazon Associate Compliance Audits.
  2. Clear Impact with Spread-Out Focus – Many of my money sites do not get the attention they deserve! Sometimes it is pretty embarrassing to look at them… When I did a thorough review of all the money sites I saw a couple of my very weak performers with the title “Best product name 2014” yup I had 2 sites like that were stuck over 2 years ago when I reviewed my top 40 sites.

3 Goals in 2016 for my Website Portfolio Business

  1. Systematize Top 20 Sites in Portfolio

Sep Update – Ongoing effort on this front and I am looking forward to continue to share parts of the process as they get locked down (such as the Amazon Associate Compliance Audit – which didn’t get finished in time for me to benefit from).

  1. Buy 1 Site Per Month

Sep Update – With my how to sell a website post there were 2 decent deals that came from that effort.

  • GOAL = 1 Website
  • ACTUAL = 2 Okay smaller websites purchased

3-purchases

If any readers are looking to sell their profitable site(s) VERY QUICKLY let me know by emailing me. I can let you know in 12hrs if I am interested and complete the purchase in 24-48hrs – Contact Me Here

  • Looking to sell FAST (under 24hrs has been accomplished!) (shorter time for due diligence on my end increases risk for me)
  • Not wanting to spend a lot of time on the sales process (analytics and income proof is all I need)
  • High quality sites making over $500-1,000/month often make sense to sell via other channels (EmpireFlippers or FEInternational are great places)
  • SEO done to the site can be questionable and that increased risk will be reflected in the sales price
  • Site being associated with a banned Amazon Associate is still possible to sell (but STEEP discount)
  • Understand that the benefits of the bullet points above means the sales multiple will be lower

If you have a website you are looking to sell fast please let me know

  1. Sell Websites Strategically for $100k Total

Aug Update – The unique website lease/sale deal is still on track.

PRIMARY GOAL – OVERALL INCOME FOR WEBSITE PORTFOLIO ABOVE $10k/MONTH

4-portfolio

Sep Update – Definitely a loss to the portfolio with the Amazon Associate account suspension. Sep should have been a great month otherwise due to some of my sites in the education space.

Part 2 – Authority Website Income Blog Profit/Loss

5-awi

3 Goals in 2015 for AuthorityWebsiteIncome.com

  1. Post Once Per Week

Sep Update – Achieved the target of once per week publishing but did not start catching up yet.

  • Actual = 4

2. 10x my Outreach

Sep Update – Only one podcast interview in Sep.

3. Site Redesign – Completed!

Sep Update – Already Completed

PRIMARY GOAL – GROW TO 30k VISITORS PER MONTH

Sep Update – 17,434 users which represents a 71% year over year increase. I believe if I can achieve my weekly posting plus my 10x outreach I can achieve this goal by the end of the year!

7-awi-traffic

Part 3 – Services Business Profit/Loss

8-services

  1. Systems Overhaul/Refresh

Sep Update – What can be measured can be improved… this is certainly showing to be the case with our COGS being much better defined now after our change from Aug/Sep. What we are now able to do is determine the costs for each part of our services and hold a team leader responsible for that teams quality, volume and cost.

  1. Improve email marking and sales automation

Sep Update – I need to just carve out some time and make this happen… I am sick of making excuses on this monthly report that it is not done!

  1. BrandBuilders.io Becomes The Go-To Resource for Done 4 You Amazon FBA Private Label Websites and Done 4 You Amazon Affiliate Sites

Sep Update – Great opportunities with Brand Builders continues.

PRIMARY GOAL – STAND ALONE SYSTEMATIZED SERVICES BUSINESS IN 2016

Part 4 – Amazon FBA Business

9-fba

  • Sell FBA Business for 30x with 3+ Solid Months
    • Sep Update – SUCCESS
  • Launch Brand #2 – Partner – Product First Focused (Brand Vision Focus)
    • Sep Update – As I continue to explore how to best tackle Amazon FBA and build a business that has serious equity value this Brand has a defined mission and the product although in a small market will clearly be the worlds best!
  • Launch Brand #3 – Investors – Affiliate Site Focused (External Traffic Focused)
    • Sep Update – Finally some success! We have successfully turned this business around after it went to 20% of baseline immediately after purchase! With inventory being received and validating the product gets good non-incentivized reviews we made decent sales and have placed a larger more aggressive order which should arrive end of Oct.

10-sep-sales-fba

  • Launch Brand #4 – Partner – Product First Focused (Unique Product Focused)
    • Sep Update – 1,300 units will be shipping mid-late October and we will be attempting to do a retail test with this product. With the issues

  • LE – Hijack and Listing Suppression Monitoring Service
    • Sep Update – SAAS can certainly be a tricky nut to crack! I was expecting great things in September for LE with the addition of the very very helpful Suppression Monitoring. However, our ability to get the word out about the solution to the pain point has been tricky. LE
      • What is a suppressed listing? Amazon will suppress a listing, meaning you make no sales while it is suppressed, and you will not be notified by them. People usually only notice when they notice a couple of days of down sales and then login to see what happened. LE will alert sellers via text and email as soon as your listing is suppressed!

Overall Income Update

Original Monthly Net Income Target (original goal $15k/month reliable income by age 35)

  • Target Net Income = $9,525

Amazon Affiliate Site to FBA Business

Today’s post I get into the weeds of how to analyze an affiliate site you either own or are considering buying to convert to an Amazon FBA model.

Basic Strategy – What the heck am I talking about?

This strategy is the basic strategy I followed to build and sell an Amazon Affiliate Site and Amazon (Fulfilled By Amazon / Private Label Product) business in 8 months with a 530% return and made $334k including sales price and net earnings.  See the full case study here – how to sell Amazon FBA business.

  • Step 1 – Build or buy an affiliate site that is generating sales of a product you believe you can source and private label yourself
  • Step 2 – Start an Amazon FBA business leveraging your affiliate website to drive traffic to your sales page.

What if you own  an affiliate site and are considering using it to build an FBA Business? Although a lot of the details in this post talk about considering the FBA model when buying a website, the information below is the same approach you would use if you own an affiliate website already and are looking to convert it into an FBA business.

phase1

What I Will Share in This Post:

  1. How to analyze the potential of an affiliate site for an FBA business
    • A – 10 Point Checklist Weighted Average Matrix to evaluate if the site could work
    • B – How to get and analyze the data to estimate potential sales driven by affiliate site
    • C – Assumptions to use based on my experience to gauge the impact Amazon organic sales will have
  2. Run the numbers (what is the expected net profit for the FBA business?)
  3. Spreadsheet I use to do this analysis – Free Download (Completed for One fake Site)
  4. A clever/slight twist on the Affiliate to FBA conversion model

ONE – How to analyze the potential of an affiliate site for an FBA business

A – 10 Point Checklist and Weighted Average Matrix To Evaluate Multiple Opportunities

Whether you own the affiliate site or are looking to buy one here are 10 key questions including their weighting in order of importance(from my perspective) to help evaluate the potential opportunity.

  1. Product can be easily sourced
  2. Not a restricted product (weapon, ecig, liquor, uranium)
  3. Similar Private Label Product Selling on Amazon
  4. Website Focused on a specific product
  5. Price point of product $20min to $40+ ideal
  6. Target $3k/month minimum amazon associate income
  7. Product is small/light (not oversized & cheaper shipping)
  8. Traffic Growing
  9. Industry Growing (easy to check with Google Trends)
  10. Backlink Profile & Risk

question

B – How to get and analyze the data to estimate sales

In order to determine the size of an opportunity, there is some critical data that is needed.

The key question we are trying to answer with this step in the process is…

“How many sales of a similar product to the one we could source does this website drive per month?”

This is a key piece of the equation when working on the next step.

So here are the detailed step by step instructions.

  1. Get the data – Login to Amazon associates account, go to reports, click on download reports, select max relevant date range and all associate tags attached to one website, download report
  2. Slice the data up using some excel tricks – Open the spreadsheet in Excel, sort all the orders by the date, create a pivot table with (filter on for relevant categories, row label = names, values = sum of items shipped). This pivot table will now show you how much of every product the site has sold. The next step is to copy that pivot table into a new tab and paste it as text then filter on the quantity so you can see the number of each unit that has been shipped starting with the most.
  3. Group the data based on the type of product you could replace – Based on looking at this table make some assumptions on the number of a similar product

Simplified Example – Download the template at the bottom of this post

category

The result for this step is that we can say in our fake example that our website sells around 500 3D Printing Pens in the given time period (for the purposes of this example assume 1 month)

C – Assumptions to use based on my experience

Back when I first launched my affiliate site to FBA case study I shared several assumptions I made well before I knew if they would be true. Some held and some didn’t, however based on a very small sample size here are the assumptions I am using to evaluate a sites potential…

item

salessplit

TWO – Run the Numbers – What is The Potential Profit?

For this section we just punch the numbers we have collected into the summary tab on the spreadsheet and it provides a very rough approximation of what kind of volume and net profit the business is going to do.

YES – I know this is simplistic and there are many ways to get into more detail (which I do in the template) but when evaluating any potential opportunity this is great way to start!

product

So after this analysis a Printing Pen (no I didn’t check if any of these numbers were reasonable) would be able to generate an additional $4k/month net profit if the little affiliate site added an FBA arm to it.

THREE – Spreadsheet I use to do this analysis – Free Download (Completed for One Site)

To get the same template I used to do my analysis on this “fake” site for the post or many other potential acquisitions simply click on the link below…

FOUR – What About Buying Both an FBA Business and Complimentary Affiliate Website

Slight Twist – Eric from DigitalStrats made the interesting suggestion that flipping the model would deal with a few of the downsides of my suggested model… meaning buy an FBA business and then add on acquiring Amazon Affiliate sites in the space. This would result in a much faster return on the investment since you would see the increase in earnings immediately. There are 3 main downsides to this model I currently see…

Upside:

  1. The time until you realize your return is higher… as soon as you point a related affiliate site at your FBA business you will see the benefit.
  2. If you can acquire both your probability of success for the overall investment goes up vs acquiring just one. This is mainly due to there being fewer unknowns that could derail the business.

Downside:

  1. Total investment required would be more substantial
  2. The ability to find complimentary affiliate sites and FBA sites all willing to sell is tricky
  3. The return on your investment is lower than if you completely added the FBA side potentially

Wrap Up

I hope me sharing this method and spreadsheet for quickly evaluating the potential is helpful to some of you. Although one of my recent migrations is not going as planned I still strongly believe in this model and am looking forward to continuing to test it out.

Here are some additional resources:

Selling my FBA Business – Interested?

Today for the first time I am putting my unique entire FBA business including all authority affiliates websites that drive the sales up for sale!

For those of you that have been following my Journey with FBA (all posts here) you have seen this unique business strategy on a very steady upward trend!

Unique Opportunity:

Purchase this $11k+/month net income highly diversified, stable and growing business…

Diversified Business (not simply 1 website)

  • 2 affiliate sites with stable history of driving sales
  • FBA product line and brand generating solid sales on Amazon

Growth:

  • Upward trend for business
  • Growing market (see Google Trends data below)
  • Peak season in May but steady all year long (not a holiday rush product)

Opportunities:

  • No PPC being used to date
  • Ecommerce drop shipping option at Affiliate Sites to increase margin
  • Product Line Expansion (several great options)
  • Value multiple growth (with more data the business/brand value should be 3x annual net income)

Validated Unique Amazon FBA Business Model:

The business model of using an Amazon Affiliate site to drive sales to launch an FBA private label product line has certainly proven itself as you can see in the graphs below. This lower risk online business model when compared to simply purchasing a single website provides both risk mitigation along with more opportunities for growth.

Simply Buying & Holding Will Result in Upside Plus Lower Risk with Diversified Traffic

The business model I am setting my team up to execute is a higher risk process involving the acquisition of several affiliate sites and the creation of brands around them. This model requires capital and I will look to use the funds of this sale to rinse and repeat the model.

Currently the value I can continue to add to this business is less than growing a new affiliate site and FBA brand.

As a result I know I am walking away from a potential 3x annual income sales multiple if I were willing to simply hold (even without additional growth).

Lower Risk vs Website Purchase – Most online business purchases are a single website that the downside of the investment is a complete $0. In this case with the diversified traffic streams of Amazon Organic, Google Organic to multiple sites there is no single point of failure.

By The Numbers:

Income

Nov & Dec Average Net Income = $10,983 USD

The business will be valued based on the numbers from November, December and January…

High-Season Approaching, Steady All Year in a Growing Market

With both the high-season coming (May) for this market and the market growing at a steady rate over the last 5 years shows that the sales are not only holiday seasonally driven.

(17.5% year over year growth from 2006 – 2016 and very stable interest around the entire calendar year)

What Is For Sale?

  • FBA Business & Brand
    • Inventory at Amazon
    • Brand & Brands Website
    • Social Accounts
    • All procedures and marketing plans
  • Affiliate Website 1
  • Affiliate Website 2
  • 600 person email list (growing at a rat of 5-10/day) (30% open rate with 15% click through rate)

Effort of Work to Run:

  • 4-8posts per month published (1hr/week – if using a VA)
  • Track inventory & Re-Order From Supplier (2hrs/week)
  • Monitor Listing (7hrs/week)

Timeline for the Sales Process:

  • Determine if there is interest in the sale from my audience (Jan 18)
  • Qualify interested parties (Jan 18 – 31)
  • Discuss via Skype with potential buyers (Jan 18 – 31)
  • Determine if private sale will be possible (Jan 18 – 31)
  • Complete private sale (Feb 7)
  • If no sale in the first week in February list on EmpireFlippers.com (first week in February)

For Myself – Rinse & Repeat

For the Buyer – Grow (PPC, Ecommerce Side, Product Line & in 1 year value business at 3x Annual Earnings ideally)

Next Steps:

If you are interested I look forward to discussing the sales process with you…

  1. Please simply email me (jon11 (at) gmail (dot) com) including…
    1. Your initial questions
    2. Proof of ability to pay (numbers or recent examples – need to filter out tire-kickers)
    3. Basic information about you/why you are looking to buy
    4. Potential times to get on Skype to discuss the sales process
  2. If interest is significant I will select ~10 qualified buyers to work with and send the due-diligence packages to
  3. Filter number of potential buyers down to 3-4 buyers and find the best fit
  4. If no private sale is in place by early February I will list at EmpireFlippers.com

Depending on the seller and their wishes I look forward to sharing the results of this process for everyone reading AuthorityWebsiteIncome.com
